Promoting Early Literacy – Through Propaganda (?)
Yesterday I saw this video from Zero to Three on promoting literacy and language development in early childhood. I have been a member and supporter of Zero to Three since my days in graduate school. I am also a big believer in the importance of the early years. Much of my career has been devoted to helping families enhance the development of their infants and toddlers because I believe strongly in the importance of trying to “get it right” from the start. This video contains some beautiful examples of responsive, nurturing interactions between caregivers and young children.
Yet I found myself a little bothered by this video. I felt like I was watching a propaganda film. Granted, it was propaganda that I liked. Maybe I was just in a bad mood when I watched it. Maybe I’m becoming too cynical of marketing messages in my old age. I don’t know. I’d love to hear your reactions to this video. Maybe it’s just me…
Without watching the video, I find that a lot of videos come across as propaganda these days. (be they nutrition/politics/religion/etc.)
