De-Stressing Christmas

The holiday season can be a joyous, heart-warming time of the year. The season, however, can also be filled with to-do lists, obligations, and STRESS! Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to be a guest on a teleseminar with Jacqueline Green of Great Parenting Practices. We spoke about ways to take the stress out of the holiday season and how to make meaningful experiences with your family. I thought it was worth sharing again. You can listen to the interview here:

Realizing that not everyone has time to listen to an audio during this busy time of year, let me make a few key suggestions for enjoying your holidays.

  • Enjoy what you’re doing when you’re doing it. Bring a sense of mindfulness to your activities. Be present where you are. So when you’re sitting at your daughter’s holiday concert, enjoy it, and try to tame your thoughts of all that you have to do as soon as it ends.
  • Make time to exercise. Even if it’s less than what you might normally do, squeeze some time in for physical activity. Exercise is well-established stress reliever.
  • Let some things slide – order take out, skip some housecleaning chores, etc. I’m guessing that your life is pretty full and busy during non-holiday times. Give yourself a break as you pile on holiday-related activities.
  • Make time for things you really enjoy about the holidays. Schedule it in, and as mentioned above, be present and enjoy them when you are doing them. Try to focus on activities that encourage family connection. Some great ideas for meaningful family holiday traditions can be found here:
  • Find ways to teach your kids about giving and compassion. There are so many opportunities at this time of the year to extend ourselves to others.

My best wishes to you for a joyous holiday season!
